Things cannot look all right so long as I

A man half-cured can see life in movement: divine life; life that is the light of men. Even man half-cured can see the Truth that is right in front of him.

Do you see anything? Jesus asked him.

I see movement, the man answered.

What do we see?

We see movement. Movement is life; movement indicates life, reflects life, reveals life. Everything that lives, moves; and every thing that moves is in some way propelled, compelled by life.

I feel movement, says the young mother, wondering at the motion she bears.

Note the movement, says a watchmaker, wondering at the motion he has himself crafted to represent with fair accuracy the progressive movement that marks all that is real, and all that reality reflects and draws, and bears us toward.

What do we see?

We see movement.

What does the movement signify?

The movement signifies life.

Had Jesus left the man without the second touch, the man would have been required to reflect more upon what he was seeing only dimly, to reflect more deeply, more continuously, more thoughtfully, more reasonably, more imaginatively, and as a result, more honestly, humbly and wondrously.

Did Jesus, in truth, heal the man most perfectly the first time – at first touch?

The second touch brought everything ‘clear’, but only in the sense of seeing merely as things appear, as they are revealed in form, which is merely and only their outward manifestation of the inner reality.

It is with great difficulty we close our eyes to what is merely clear to us in appearance alone, and really, truly, see.

The man clearly saw Jesus in the flesh; but did he see the man for whom the world had been waiting for all time, who would change the world for all time, the man who would, by his death reconcile humanity for all time to God? Did he see God Himself working right in front of him to open his eyes in just one touch?
